Plywood & Strings

Some people say its just a cheap old guitar
Might be the best I'll ever have
Other folks say they'd give their right or left arm
Just to hold it once in their good hand

Some kids they steal their mama's diamonds and pearls
Hock it all for just a little bit of smack
I'd like to think that I wasn't that bad
But I hear them talk behind my back

Chorus:
I hocked my mama's silverware
Just to buy this cheap old guitar
For plywood & strings, and a little gasoline
Down the road on a wing & a prayer

My mother died one winter a few years ago
Dad was gone a long time before
All she ever had was her sterling silverware
Then I saw a fork just sticking in the road

So I cleaned it all up as best I could
And I prayed that my mother didn't care
Well the hippies & the rednecks they all have guitars
But they were starring at my mother's silverware

Chorus:
So I hocked my mama's silverware
I ain't ever felt so bad
For plywood & strings, and a little gasoline
Down the road on a wing & a prayer
